Breaking changes
- Node pools no longer receive a default
terminationGracePeriod. Clusters that rely on the 24-hour bound must set karpenter.termination_grace_period explicitly. The base chart now refuses to render a budget permitting zero evictions.
- The release states that both node group updates cause a rolling replacement of the managed node group on the apply that introduces them. Apply them in a maintenance window and in the same apply so the group is replaced once.
- Defaults change on upgrade with no configuration change, including a one-time paced node roll if the AMI alias resolves differently. The release states that no state migration is required and refers to the 2.30.0 entry in the module upgrade guide.
Upgrade impact
Review the breaking changes before upgrading. Confirm termination grace period requirements, maintenance-window planning for managed node group replacement, and the expected effect of updated defaults on the deployed cluster.
Verification
Review the Terraform plan and use the release's destroy-preparation and Karpenter assessment scripts where applicable. Validate node group replacement behavior, Karpenter disruption protections, controller scheduling, and workload placement in a controlled environment before applying the change through your normal deployment controls.
